Palaces, opera, and a dead dragon

I took a risk, and joined a small group of people visiting the palaces in Potsdam. It is a day trip typically outside of Berlin. I needed to come back on time for the opera at 5pm. I heard of great things about the palaces. I just couldn’t miss it. It was worth the risk. I had to put on a pair of special slippers inside of the palaces to avoid scratching the floor with the street shoes. Not only the architecture of the palaces is amazing, the decorations inside can be over the top. One toom was decorated fully with sea shells! The collection of paintings is also eye opening. And… I came back just in time for the opera! The folks at the opera house must think I am crazy. I was wearing shorts and a jacket when I picked up the ticket. I changed to a nice shirt and pants at the restroom. That’s good enough for me! The opera is the 3rd part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle – Siegfried. That’s the part that a dragon was killed! The opera house is contemporary and the inside is simple and neat. I had to figure out how to have dinner during two intermissions. The opera started at 5pm and finished around 10:45pm. It was a new experience for me to have some dinner food at the opera – got an appetizer first and the dessert during the 2nd break. The production was post-modern style. Singing and performing were excellent. I was sitting 7th row from the orchestra/stage, right at the center. It was a great seat and a great treat to myself. There was only German caption, no English. Although I don’t know German, I got a pretty good idea of the 3 acts. So I just simply enjoyed the music, the singing, and the acting. It was great! A good way to end the last night in Berlin.20110915-032834.jpg20110915-032910.jpg20110915-032928.jpg20110915-032948.jpg20110915-033015.jpg20110915-033116.jpg20110915-033135.jpg20110915-033159.jpg20110915-033229.jpg20110915-033316.jpg20110915-033339.jpg20110915-033414.jpg20110915-033435.jpg20110915-033504.jpg

What a great day to visit the splendid palace and enjoy Wagner’s opera. The dragon must be quite long and should take long time to kill. From the photos I can see what you dressed before and after. Good job!

The dragon was killed in the second act. It’s long because it Wagner’s opera. πŸ™‚

Who knew, Berlin and palaces??! I would say they are even more or at least as spectacular as the famous Versailles.

Lucky you for going to Vienna State Opera too! The one I went to blew the MET out of the water.
